1) What made you want to start your own business?
Magic has been a passion of mine since the age of 11. After few years of practice, I began to perform shows at birthday parties charging a small fee. As the years went by my magic got better and my fee began to increase. It got to a point when I was studying Bournemouth University, that I was being booked to perform at corporate events and weddings. This began to fund my university life with a bit of added luxury living. It was then I knew I wanted this forever!
2) How did you come up with your idea?
I love to entertain family and friends with my magical skills. I’d be on the concourse at Cranford Community College performing magic during break and lunch time. Wearing a ‘Patka’ at the time, I would be referred to as ‘Singh’, however the elder students would refer to me as ‘Magic Singh’. It was then the name stuck and has now become a well renowned name.
3) What’s been the toughest part of the journey?
The have been MANY people including family members whom would discourage me form doing this as a living, because it wasn’t the normal thing to do. It wasn’t a ‘9-5 job’. I was told that I have to think about my future, pensions, mortgage etc and that ‘doing this hobby’ isn’t going to pay the bills in adulthood.
However that simply made me stronger and I didn’t give up as I persisted to become the best in my field. It was tough, but I got through it and it feels great!
4) What are your fears?
When you are 100% focused on your work, you feel fearless and nothing can stop you. This is how I feel.
5) What are your hopes?
I hope to have a successful TV career doing magic which I hope will lead to theatre shows around the World.
6) How did you come up with your business plan?
I’ve researched about many successful artists in various fields and entrepreneurs. By listening and reading what they have done to build a successful career or empire, I simply model my business plan by using an eclectic approach by picking and choosing key ideas that are applicable to my career.
7) How have you financed the business?
The finance originally came from mum and dad buying me the magic tricks and books to get me started. When I started performing for a fee, I’d simple use that money to fund my business. This is how I operate today.
8) What do your family and friends think of it?
Ever since I have made a success of my ‘hobby’, family and friends have become very supportive.
9) What sacrifices have you had to make to get to where you are right now?
Rather than going out all the time clubbing, partying and more, I’d spend majority of my university years investing time and perfecting my magic. I’d then occasionally go out to the house parties showing people and new friends my magic. If something didn’t go well I’d be back in my room perfecting my craft.
10) What are you proud of?
I’m proud that I get to travel the World with my beautiful Wife performing magic to the rich and famous and many people from different backgrounds. I get to see the World with my soulmate by doing what I love the most!
11) What are your tips for anyone wanting to start a business?
Never give up! If you believe that you can make a success if your business, stick with it because in the end you will reap the results.
12) What business advice could you share with the viewers?
You only live once! You’ve heard this a thousand times! This statement can’t be any truer! Do more of what you Love – “Johnny Cupcakes”. If you have a passion for something, be sure to feed it every day! Never become lazy, because there will always be someone else in the same field the will be working and exceeding when you’re taking a break, sleeping or starving your passion.
